What are Microgreens?
Microgreens are small seedlings of vegetables grown fresh from seed. They are young, edible greens harvested at an early stage of growth, typically between 7 to 10 days after germination.
During the 1980s, chefs in California’s restaurants used for ten to fourteen-day-old seedlings, precisely when they sprouted 2-3 leaves above the ground. These seedlings were harvested by removing their roots before being served. At that time it was only used to decorate food, but later its properties were researched.
Research shows various facts about its nutritional value and many compare it with mother’s milk. Many nutrients are hidden in these newly sprouted plants.

How to Grow Microgreens in Bangladesh?
Your steps for growing microgreens in Bangladesh seem spot on! Let’s dive into a bit more detail for each step:
- Preparation: Keep the microgreens block moist overnight. Ensure it’s adequately damp but not waterlogged. Drain excess water to maintain proper moisture levels.
- Layering: Spread a layer of moist cocopeat on top of the microgreens tray. This layer provides a suitable bed for the seeds to germinate and grow.
- Seeding: Spread the seeds evenly across the cocopeat bed. Make sure they’re not too densely packed, allowing each seed space to grow.
- Covering and Germination: Cover the seeded tray with its bottom layer or another tray to create a dark, humid environment ideal for germination. Keep it in a dark place until the seeds start sprouting.
- Spraying: Spray the seeds lightly once or twice a day to maintain moisture levels. Be gentle to avoid dislodging the seeds.
- Germination Stage: After about three days, when you see proper germination (small sprouts emerging), move the tray to a well-lit area. Natural or artificial light will help the microgreens grow.
- Growth and Harvest: Within 7 to 10 days, your microgreens should reach an optimal size for harvest. They’ll have developed their first set of true leaves. Use scissors to harvest them just above the soil level, and they’re ready to be enjoyed in your favorite dishes!
